We docked in this attractive sailing and fishing port, a suburb of Rostock, the gateway for trips to Berlin and the Baltic coast. Founded in about 1200, Warnemunde was for centuries a mere fishing village until 1323 was purchased by Rostock in order to safeguard the city's access to the Baltic. It has developed to be an important sea resort with sandy beaches that are the largest on the German Baltice seacoast. The lighthouse, currently in use was built in 1897 and has an impressive view over the Baltic Seas. We went off on our own and spent three hours walking the historic center, promenade and beautiful village. We enjoyed St. Christopher's Church, the Lighthouse, the University building from 1493 ,the picturesque canal with shops and pubs that were originally homes of the fishermen. It was good exercise and the weather was great as we needed a sweater only. There were lots of people walking through the village and other cruise ships in the harbor. As we left the dock it seemed almost dangerous with the narrow entrance to the harbor and so much traffic. We had a wonderful day and enjoyed dinner in the small plates tasting restaurant in the company of a very nice couple from South Africa. For the first evening we stayed awake for the Master Magician show. As you probably can see, I am still having problems with the format and positioning pictures.
