People have been drawn to the bounty of this place for thousands of years. The first British settlement was a Hudson's Bay Company post, founded in 1843 called Fort Victoria. The city is surrounded by water on three sides. The water is a symphony of passenger boats, car ferries, yachts, schooners, float planes, and water taxis. There is plenty to explore around Inner harbour and it is best experienced on foot to watch street performers and artist vie for your attention. People in Victoria are serious about gardening and the city's technicolor gardens and the variety of architecture is a feast to the eye.
